New Testament Use of the Septuagint – Matthew 19:18-19

Here is New Testament passage that shows that the Septuagint was the version of the Scriptures used by the early church and the Holy Spirit. The Septuagint version I am using is the Lexham English Septuagint 2nd Edition, which is available in print or as part of Logos Bible Software. Occasionally I also use the Brenton translation of the LXX for insight into difficult passages.

18 Then he said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS [pseudomartureo]; 19 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” Matthew 19:18–19 (NASB95)

13 “You shall not commit adultery. 14 “You shall not steal. 15 “You shall not murder. 16 “You shall not testify falsely [pseudomartureo] against your neighbor with a false testimony. Exodus 20:13–16 (LES2)

12 “Honor your father and mother, so that it may be well for you and so that you may be long-lived upon the good land that the Lord your God is giving to you. Exodus 20:12 (LES2)

18 And your hand will not take vengeance for you, and you will not bear a grudge against the sons of your people. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself—I myself am the Lord. Leviticus 19:18 (LES2)

13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Exodus 20:13–16 (NASB95)

12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you. Exodus 20:12 (NASB95)

18 ‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:18 (NASB95)

This one goes to the MT because the order Matthew 19:18 agrees with the order in Exodus in the MT.
