cosmology Is it really that important if we believe that Genesis Chapter One is a literally true and accurate history of creation and a reliable source for understanding the design of the heavens and earth? It should be clear to us that the veracity of the first book of the Bible is foundational to its being trustworthy at all. The truth is always important in its own right, but, in this case, the authority of God is at stake. Shall we believe what he said or what men say? In addition, an accurate knowledge of the earth and heavens is reveals the truth about God to us. (Psalm 19:1 and Romans 1:20) If our perception of creation is not based on truth, our understanding of God’s nature and power will be wrong. In fact, as has happened to many, we may come to believe that God does not even exist. Believing a lie about creation and where we live opens us up to a host of other deceptions. Saddest of all, disbelieving the opening book of the Bible is the same as calling God a liar.

Heliocentrism is a direct attack upon the veracity of God’s Word from Genesis to Revelation.

The three-tiered enclosed cosmology which includes the earth, a solid firmament separating earth from God’s domain in heaven above the firmament, and Sheol or Hades below is described throughout the Bible. One cannot dismiss the truth about biblical cosmology without calling into question the truthfulness of the entire Bible.

If we adopt a dishonest approach to interpreting Scripture to avoid looking foolish in the world’s eyes, it is dishonors God and reveals we would rather have the praise of men than God’s. Mankind’s first sin was to doubt the truthfulness of God’s words and disobey his simple command.

Esteeming God’s Word as the highest standard of truth is part of what it means to submit to Christ’s lordship.

When we put more confidence in our own reasoning or the words of men than we have in the Bible, we commit Adam’s sin all over again. Instead God wants us to…

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and turn away from evil. Proverbs 3:5–7 (NASB95)

Faith in God includes faith in what the Bible says about his creation.

By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible. Hebrews 11:3 (NASB95)

If we disbelieve what the Bible says, we thereby claim to be smarter than God, which is never a good move.

Having a proper understanding of the heavens and earth will enhance our appreciation of the Bible’s accuracy, deepen our awareness of the Creator, and prepare us to resist end-time deception
