New Testament Use of the Septuagint – Matthew 15:7-9

Here is New Testament passage that shows that the Septuagint was the version of the Scriptures used by the early church and the Holy Spirit. The Septuagint version I am using is the Lexham English Septuagint 2nd Edition, which is available in print or as part of Logos Bible Software. Occasionally I also use the Brenton translation of the LXX for insight into difficult passages.

7 “You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 8 ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS [timao] ME WITH THEIR LIPS [cheilos], BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY [porro] FROM ME. 9 ‘BUT IN VAIN [maten] DO THEY WORSHIP [sebo] ME, TEACHING [didasko] AS DOCTRINES [didaskalia] THE PRECEPTS [entalma] OF MEN.’ ” Matthew 15:7–9 (NASB95)

13 And the Lord said, “This people [laos] approaches me with their mouth, and with their lips [cheilos] they honor [timao] me, but their heart remains far [apecho] from me. And they are pious [sebo – worship] to me pointlessly [maten], teaching [didasko] human [anthropos] rules [entalma] and instructions [didaskalia]. Isaiah 29:13 (LES2)

13 Then the Lord said, “Because this people draw near with their words And honor Me with their lip service, But they remove their hearts far from Me, And their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote, Isaiah 29:13 (NASB95)

It seems clear that Matthew here quotes the LXX.
