New Testament Use of the Septuagint – Matthew 19:4-5

Here is New Testament passage that shows that the Septuagint was the version of the Scriptures used by the early church and the Holy Spirit. The Septuagint version I am using is the Lexham English Septuagint 2nd Edition, which is available in print or as part of Logos Bible Software. Occasionally I also use the Brenton translation of the LXX for insight into difficult passages.

4 And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, 5 and said, ‘FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE [KATALEIPO] HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED [KOLLAO] TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH’? Matthew 19:4–5 (NASB95)

27 And God made [poieo – to make] humankind; he made him according to the image of God; he made them male and female. Genesis 1:27 (LES2)

24 For this reason a man will leave behind [kataleipo] his father and his mother and will cleave [proskallao] to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 (LES2)

27 God created [bara – shape, fashion, create] man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27 (NASB95)

24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 (NASB95)

I make this a close win for the LXX based on the difference between the verb to make (LXX) and to create (MT) in Genesis 1:27.
